A few years ago, we worked with a yoga collective in Singapore called Urban Yogis. They had a beautiful purpose — bringing mindfulness and movement into the city’s daily rhythm — but when COVID hit, everything stopped. Studios closed. Classes vanished. Their purpose was intact, but their mission was frozen.

They needed a new way to live what they stood for. Together, we reimagined how they could carry that energy into a different world.

Purpose is our engine. Vision is our horizon, and it might be larger than we realize.

We all start with that flicker of purpose — the why that lights us up. But vision? That’s what gives the spark somewhere to travel. It’s the picture we hold in our minds of a future worth chasing. It’s where our work becomes movement.

Without vision, purpose can drift. You know why you’re here, but not yet where you’re headed. And that’s where we lose momentum.

When we imagine a future together — something brave, something bigger than today — that’s when purpose takes flight.

Seeing Beyond the Shore

When we first dreamed up Portray.al, we weren’t chasing another agency model. We were charting a different course — a creative vessel for people who crave truth in their storytelling. We pictured founders, artists, and changemakers seeing themselves clearly for the first time… and smiling like, “Yeah. That’s me.”

That’s vision. It’s not corporate jargon or a dusty statement on a wall. It’s a horizon that pulls us forward, even when the wind dies.

Every strong brand starts with a reason — a pulse beneath the story. Purpose is what separates the noise-makers from the meaning-makers. It’s what turns a project into something people believe in.

About twenty years ago, I spent a few years in a men’s group inspired by David Deida’s bestseller, The Way of the Superior Man.

We’d gather regularly — a circle of men with wildly different paths but one shared intent: to live and lead with purpose. Each week we’d set goals, articulate what we believed we were here to do, and then hold each other accountable to it. Sometimes that meant encouragement. Sometimes it meant a call-out. But it was always rooted in truth and love.

That experience left a deep mark on me. It taught me that purpose isn’t something you invent — it’s something you remember. And it’s something best discovered in the presence of others who see you clearly enough to reflect it back.

Take ten minutes and write — no filters, no editing. Let yourself be playful with this.

What problem or need in the world do I feel called to address?
Why does this matter to me personally?
What would feel missing in the world if my brand didn’t exist?

If you’re part of a team, have everyone answer these questions separately, then compare. Notice the themes that repeat. Those threads usually lead to your shared purpose.
