(Why I’m Not a “Digital Nomad”)

There’s a story the internet loves.

A laptop.
A beach.
A flat white in Lisbon.
Total independence.

The self-contained operator.
The sovereign builder.
The one-man army scaling from a hammock.

I’ve lived abroad for years.
I work digitally.
I love freedom.

But let me say this clearly:

I am not a digital nomad.

I’m a digital worker.

And I do not function alone.

The Myth of the Self-Made Builder

Somewhere along the way, independence became the highest virtue.

Don’t need anyone.
Don’t rely on anyone.
Don’t tie yourself down.

Mobility became synonymous with mastery.

But here’s what I’ve learned the hard way:

No serious brand is built in isolation.

And no serious human thrives without a village.

Belief is powerful.

But belief without structure drifts.

For years, I believed in what PORTRAY.AL could become.

What changed everything wasn’t more motivation.

It was support.

I hired an additional creative team — not because I couldn’t do the work, but because I needed sustained attention. Accountability. Real deadlines. Shared commitment.

That’s when it clicked:

My problem wasn’t branding.

My problem was attention drift.

I gave my best attention to urgent client work, and my own dream got leftovers.

That’s a recipe for “someday.”

And “someday” is where great brands go to die.

Protect Your Attention Like Treasure

Belief is the beginning.

There’s a line I keep coming back to when I think about branding:

Energy flows where attention goes.

Call it psychology.
Call it mechanics.
Call it “woo.”

The takeaway is practical either way:

What you consistently focus on… gets built.

And if you’ve ever tried to launch something that actually matters — a business, a rebrand, a new identity — you already know this is true.

Because the biggest threat to your dream isn’t competition.

It’s drift.

The Cobbler Had No Shoes

For decades, I helped clients clarify their message, refine their identity, and launch brands that felt real.

Meanwhile, my own agency site was basically a fossil from 2012.

I winced when people asked to see it.

I told myself I’d fix it “soon.”

Then COVID hit. I committed. I invested. Courses. Tools. Systems. Software. Training.

I could see it.

And then reality did what reality does — client work, deadlines, survival mode.

The dream agency went back to “later.”

And “later” is where non-urgent dreams quietly die.

The Fear Under the Hood

Imposter syndrome? Absolutely.

Not because I wasn’t capable.
Because I was stepping into something bigger.

If your next project doesn’t scare you a little, it’s probably not your best idea.

Perfectionism.
Over-planning.
Waiting to feel “ready.”

All respectable disguises for the same thing:

Fear of expansion.

Frenemies and Early Dreams

Not everyone deserves access to your early dream.

Some people hear your vision and immediately start cross-examining it.

“Isn’t someone already doing that?”
“You didn’t finish the last thing.”
“You’ll never be great.”

That last one was said to me.

We don’t talk anymore.

Feedback is gold.

But consistent discouragement is poison.

If someone leaves you feeling smaller after sharing your vision, they don’t deserve early access to your treasure map.

Let’s recap:

Attention is real currency.

Whatever gets your attention gets your energy.
Whatever gets your energy gets repeated.
Whatever gets repeated becomes identity.

And identity becomes brand.

Belief is the beginning.

But belief alone won’t build it.

Without vision, purpose can drift. You know why you’re here, but not yet where you’re headed. And that’s where we lose momentum.

When we imagine a future together — something brave, something bigger than today — that’s when purpose takes flight.
