Here’s an unforgettable moment from our journey: During a two-day “slow boat” ride from Chiang Khang to Luang Prabang, we stopped to visit a small Hmong village. At first, the experience was heartbreaking. The villagers had been forcibly relocated from their mountain homes to the banks of the Mekong River, their lives transformed into a spectacle for passing tourists. Watching a group of eager visitors crowd into their homes and snap pictures left me deeply unsettled.

Needing a moment to myself, I wandered away from the group, saying a quiet prayer, my heart heavy. That’s when I noticed three little girls giggling and following me. When I turned and smiled, they squealed with delight, running away to peek at me from behind corners. We played their playful game until they led me to a house filled with the rhythmic sounds of gongs and rattles.

Inside, I witnessed something extraordinary: the village shaman, 93 years old, performing a ritual for the community. A lifeless suckling pig lay as an offering to the spirits. Despite the solemnity of the moment, the villagers welcomed me, allowing me to document this sacred ceremony with care and respect.
